Selecting Servers for PC-Topp
Instead of suggesting specific machine types to buy we try to give you general guidelines for hardware suitable for PC-Topp because judging computer systems only on the basis of their technical data can be very misleading. Systems with comparable specifications and pricing can greatly diverge in performance.
Therefore we rather rely on measuring the performance of the systems currently used by our customers and have gained wide practical experience in evaluating speed and performance of server systems.

PC-Topp Service PC
The speed of that PC has a high impact on the overall speed with which PC-Topp's Intranet pages are displayed. Therefore we recommend machines with the following equipment:
- At least four state-of-the-art processors with high clock rates (plus a second CPU in case of more than four cores), i.e. an Intel XEON E5[n] or Intel I7 processor of the latest generation with 2.5 GHz or higher
- At least 4 GByte of RAM memory (fastest memory version available)
- 80 GBytes of hard disk memory
- SATA or SAS hard disks with more than 50 MB / s read / write access during load for separate storage of system and data (three physical disks for system, Drive_F and local installation including SQL Server)
- A Gigabit network card
Workstations
PC-Topp workstations should be well equipped but reasonably priced desktop PCs, optimized to run Windows and its applications smoothly. Currently, they would be equipped with:
-
Intel I5 or I7 processors with a high clock rate
(Core 2 Duo or similar processors are tolerated but not recommended. Pentium 4 machines or even older processors are not supported.)
- At least 2 GByte (better 4 GByte or more) of DDR3 memory (1.333 GHz).
- A Gigabit network card
PC-Topp is optimized for SXGA 19" monitors (1280x1024) and can be used on XGA monitors (1024x768) with some restrictions. (17" CRT monitors are not advisable as they equal only 15" TFT and users do not accept SXGA resolution on such a small screen.)

Machine Terminals
The PC-Topp Machine Terminal software requires a powerful machine with the same specifications as a PC-Topp workstation. To connect a counter and/or a key card reader, serial ports (or USB ports) are required. The PC-Topp.NET Machine Terminal requires a screen resolution of at least 1280x1024px. It should preferably be run with a touch sensitive screen.
Operating System
In general, all PCs used to run PC-Topp should have NTFS formatted hard drives.
• Service PC
The PC-Topp Service PC requires:
• Workstations
We recommend Windows 7 or Windows Vista for the PC-Topp Workstations and the PC-Topp Machine Terminal.
Software
PC-Topp.NET is designed for Microsoft Internet Explorer®. The browser must be installed in an up-to-date version, i.e. Internet Explorer 8 (including all Service Packs and updates).
Printers
We recommend printers from Hewlett Packard or other manufacturers' compatible printers.
Printers should be connected directly to the network, we discourage the use of workstation printers.
