Analog Devices aka ADI is supplying BMW with E²B, the supplier’s 10Base-T1S ethernet to edge bus technology.

It said ethernet allows new, zonal architectures in the design of software defined vehicles. BMW will use the technology for ambient lighting systems.

ADI has been working with the automaker to simplify introducing ethernet to the edge and defining the new 10Mbps standard called 10Base-T1S. This removes microcontrollers and shifts software from edge nodes to central processing units providing an all-hardware edge node while reducing software development and qualification processes.

“”While working alongside ADI on 10Base-T1S E²B, we joined efforts on a number of key considerations, from simplifying implementation, to cost analysis and design support.

“The relationship with ADI has enabled us to move more quickly to market with [the new technology],” BMW said in a statement.

Ambient lighting can be complex to implement, use current technology, and difficult to scale and update as the number of LEDs increases.
